Athlete: a person who has one of the following conditions: Intellectual or developmental disabilities
- Intellectual Disabilities (ID): a disability characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning (reasoning, learning, problem-solving) and in adaptive behaviour, which covers a range of everyday social and practical skills.
- Developmental Disabilities (DD): are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behaviour areas. These conditions begin during the developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person's lifetime.
Unified Partner: a person without ID/DD who trains and plays as a teammate alongside Special Olympics Athletes. This person can be someone with other disabilities.
Unified: to be inclusive of people with and without intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Unified Sports: an ongoing sports training/league that joins people with and without intellectual or developmental disabilities on the same team.
Unified Sports Course: a course provided by Special Olympics to certify school teachers on how to run an inclusive sports session.
Unified Leaders Club: a group of students with and without intellectual or developmental disabilities in a club that provides opportunities for youth to plan, lead and participate in activities, interact with peers in a supervised setting. Some clubs focus on a specific area (leadership, environment, arts, robotics, science, etc.)
Inclusive Youth Leadership: when young people of all abilities are given opportunities to be leaders in their schools and communities.
Whole School Engagement: activities that positively impact school climate by including all students, teachers, staff, administrators.
People of Determination (PoD): Under the National Policy for Empowering People with Special Needs, people with special needs or disabilities will be referred to as 'people of determination' to recognize their achievements in different fields.
Neurodiverse: displaying or characterized by autistic or other neurologically atypical patterns of thought or behaviour; not neurotypical
Unified School: A school that offers Unified Sports during one semester.
Unified Champion School: A school that completes all UCS program criteria.
